What is Coco Peat?

Coco peat is a sustainable, renewable resource that has revolutionized agriculture worldwide. Coco peat is a non-fibrous, spongy, light, corrugated material. The scientific use of coco peat was discovered in the early 90s.
In the gardening world, it has transformed into an environmentally friendly “soil-less” product .Hydroponics and large greenhouses have become the preferred growing medium for growers around the world.

How to prepare Peat

Coconut husks are collected from areas belonging to the Coconut Triangle as well as from salty coastal areas. As the salinity of the coconut husks thus obtained is not stable, the coconut husks are washed 4 times with fresh water to obtain the optimum EC and pH level. After washing, the husks are crushed to obtain coco peat. After that, they are compressed and packed in different sizes.

Use of home gardening

It is a popular growth medium. From urban homes to large greenhouses, traditional farms are used to grow crops. Coir has many beneficial properties for cultivation

  • As a substrate or growing medium in Greenhouses
  • As an amendment to improve the soil texture, soil aeration and moisture retention capacity
  • It supports seed germination and growth of seedlings by retaining moisture and nutrients .

Utilization of coconut peat in the industrial sector

The porous spongy structure and its high cation exchange capacity make it a useful material for industry.

  • Dry oil, lubricant, chemical solvents are absorbed by the coco peat
  • Used as an insulator in the manufacture of fuse plugs and similar applications
  • In the manufacture of particle boards
  • Used in the extraction of natural dyes

Use of coco peat in animal husbandry

  • Due to the high water absorption properties, it is widely used as animal beds in stables.
  • Used as an animal bedding for exotic pets such as lizards, spiders, frogs and snakes.
Benefits of using Coco peat
  • It has high moisture retention capacity. (up to 800% moisture retention, based on its dry weight).
  • Having a high cation exchange capacity of 20 to 30 meq / 100g
  • Maintain a high buffering capacity of the soil as it has good resistance to changes in pH
  • Ability for plants to store and release nutrients
  • It can be reused for up to 5 years and It can then be composted or added directly to the soil
  • 100% environment friendly.
  • Resistant to fungal and microbial activity .

A coco peat based cultivation war is currently taking place around the world.
